Job Description: Secondary Woodworking Teacher
Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university OR combination of education/experience to qualify for a New Mexico Public Education Department Vocational-Technical License. Current New Mexico Public Education Department 6-12, 5-9, or PK-12 Specialty Area license depending upon grade level(s) being taught with proper endorsement(s) on license for subject area(s) being taught also qualifies for consideration.
Position Summary
The Woodworking / Industrial Arts Teacher provides instruction in woodworking, carpentry, and construction fundamentals within a Career & Technical Education (CTE) program. The teacher delivers standards-based instruction aligned with the New Mexico Public Education Department and district curriculum, promotes safe operation of tools and machinery, and prepares students for postsecondary education, apprenticeships, and careers in the skilled trades.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Instruction & Curriculum
- Develop and implement lesson plans aligned with New Mexico Content Standards and Benchmarks for CTE
- Teach woodworking fundamentals, including measuring, blueprint reading, tool use, material selection, joinery, assembly, and finishing
- Instruct and model safe operation of hand tools and stationary power equipment (e.g., table saw, band saw, drill press, sanders)
- Integrate math, literacy, and employability skills into instruction
- Differentiate instruction to support diverse learners, including English Learners and students with IEPs/504 plans
- Assess student progress and maintain accurate records in accordance with district and state requirements
Shop & Safety Management
- Establish and enforce strict shop safety procedures in compliance with district policy and applicable state/federal safety standards
- Supervise students at all times during tool and equipment operation
- Maintain inventory of tools, equipment, and materials
- Conduct routine safety inspections and submit maintenance requests as needed
- Ensure proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE)
Professional Responsibilities
- Maintain appropriate New Mexico teaching licensure
- Participate in required professional development and evaluation processes
- Collaborate with CTE staff, counselors, and administrators
- Support Career and Technical Student Organizations (CTSOs) when applicable
- Maintain positive communication with parents/guardians
Preferred Qualifications
- Industry experience in carpentry, woodworking, or construction trades
- OSHA safety certification (e.g., OSHA 10 or 30)
- Experience working with secondary students
Physical Requirements
The physical demands described are representative of those required to successfully perform essential functions:
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods (6–8 hours daily)
- Ability to lift, carry, and move materials weighing up to 50 pounds
- Ability to bend, kneel, crouch, climb step ladders, and reach overhead
- Manual dexterity sufficient to safely operate woodworking tools and machinery
- Visual acuity to read measurements, plans, and safety markings
- Ability to hear and communicate effectively in a high-noise shop environment
- Ability to demonstrate physical woodworking techniques and proper tool use
