Position Summary:

The School Custodian is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and orderly environment for students, staff, and visitors. Duties include cleaning classrooms, restrooms, hallways, and other school facilities, as well as performing minor maintenance tasks.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Sweep, mop, vacuum, and wax floors in classrooms, hallways, and common areas
• Clean and disinfect restrooms, replenish supplies (soap, paper towels, toilet paper)
• Empty trash and recycling bins and dispose of waste properly
• Dust and clean furniture, windows, blinds, walls, and other surfaces
• Set up and break down furniture and equipment for events or activities
• Perform minor repairs (e.g., replace light bulbs, fix door handles, unclog sinks/toilets)
• Monitor heating, cooling, and ventilation systems for basic functionality
• Ensure building security by locking doors and windows after hours
• Respond to emergency cleanups (e.g., spills, bodily fluids)
• Report safety hazards, needed repairs, or incidents to appropriate personnel

Qualifications:

• High school diploma or GED
• Prior custodial or janitorial experience desirable
• Basic knowledge of cleaning chemicals, equipment, and safety practices
• Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions
• Dependable, punctual, and able to work independently or as part of a team

Physical Requirements:

• Standing/Walking: Frequently (up to 8 hours/day)
• Lifting/Carrying: Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds occasionally
• Climbing/Balancing: Ability to use ladders and stairs
• Bending/Stooping/Kneeling: Regularly throughout the day
• Repetitive Motion: Frequent use of arms, hands, and wrists for cleaning tasks
• Vision: Must be able to see to perform cleaning tasks and operate equipment safely
• Hearing/Speaking: Ability to communicate effectively with staff and students

Work Environment:

• Primarily indoors in school facilities, with occasional outdoor tasks (e.g., snow removal, groundskeeping)
• Exposure to cleaning chemicals, bodily fluids, dust, and potential safety hazards
• May be required to work evenings, weekends, or during school holidays depending on needs
